Do You Remember Me?
The late Rabbi Dr. Lord Jonathan Sacks Z”L once shared that the most common question he received after his lectures was: “Do you remember me?”
Yizkor is a time when we do just that. We remember those who shaped our lives, whose presence continues to live on in us, and we ask G-d to remember them as well—to hold their souls close and bind them in the bond of eternal life.
Our loved ones’ souls are no longer bound by the physical world and feel no lacking. Yet they can no longer perform a mitzvah in this world. When we do a mitzvah in their honor, we become their hands and feet, allowing them to continue elevating the physical world through us. This is why the Yizkor prayer includes a commitment to give Tzedakah in their memory.
Please fill out the Yizkor form (linked below) so we can include your loved one in our Yizkor Book and say the Yizkor prayer in their memory on Yom Kippur (click here for Yom Kippur Prayers schedule). There is a suggested amount, but no amount of Tzedakah is too large or too small.
PS. Remember to light a second Yahrzeit licht (24-hour candle) in memory of your loved one by 6:52 PM on Sunday, September 21.
